about

Originally a song I wrote in 2013 for Diminished Men and then adapted and expanded for an early version of cantrip called Northern Cantrips. One of the oldest pieces on the record, originally called Devil’s Night, I wrote it at a time I was reading about that Halloween tradition in Detroit. It was really just a throw away working title, but one that stuck all the way up until the night before mastering the record. Lonely One is the title of a story about a serial killer set in Ray Bradbury’s fictional town of Greentown, Illinois. It was writen from around a time period when I was writing a lot of “noir” jazz sounding work. It uses some pretty guitar specific compositional devices, mostly the cross string arpeggios of the introduction and interludes and the chord voicing of the verses. Originally it was just the introduction and verses, but the off kilter bass vamp that starts the guitar solo was added later when I was really into Hermeto Pascoal’s music and specifically exploring some syncopated tuplets. A tuplet is a polyrhythm where the beat is broken up into an odd number of equal pieces, so for one or several musical beats you might play five notes in that space or three( which is called a triplet) or seven, it often feels unsettling or incorrect and is something I find exciting. I try to use polyrhythms as a way to create a type of suspense in music. A syncopated tuplet is one that doesn’t start on a beat, but starts on an off beat. There is still something to me inherently exciting about the liminal space of syncopated tuplets, how they exist simultaneously in two different time structures at the same time. I think the guitar solo is hilarious.
